Class of 1963 60th Reunion

Class of 1963 60th Reunion

The party was a year late, but still full of smiles, laughter, and gratitude as the Class of 1963 celebrated their time together at Vic High. Seventy guests gathered in person at Victoria’s Cedar Hill Golf Club April 27, 2024, and a few memories were shared from alumni in far-off cities. Alumni pored over several copies of their Camosun, inspected memorabilia from the Vic High Archives and Museum, and purchased Vic High-branded ball caps, mugs, clothing, and other items at the Alumni’s pop-up store.  The food was wonderful, prizes were given out, and of course, Come Give A Cheer was sung with great enthusiasm. An anonymous donor covered the event costs, so attendees made donations to the Vic High Alumni totalling almost  $2000 in lieu of an event fee.  Special thanks to organizers Doug Cliff, JoEllen Morrison, Gillian Thomas, and Leigh Large assisted by Nancy Ring. The Reunion Team will decide how the funds collected will support the Alumni and Vic High.

Memories from Afar

Wendy (Maxwell) Michener wrote:  Hello from the east coast (Nova Scotia) and a ’63 Grad. Greetings to all who were so lucky to have attended Vic High. I still feel like cheering when I read Alumni newsletters. I returned to the school in ’63 to complete high school…one class only. [I was] actually in the Class of ’62 but family headed off to Ontario for supposedly my grad year.  [I] miss the west coast but Nova Scotia is amazing. [I] retired here from Alberta in ’02.

And Robin Jeffrey sent greetings from Australia:  After Grade 12, like a lot of us, I went to UVic in that first intake in the autumn of 1963 after it had become a full-fledged university. After graduation in 1967, I went to India with CUSO and taught English for two years in a government high school in the new city of Chandigarh. India and I have been trying to understand each other ever since.

I went from Chandigarh to Brighton in the UK and did a doctorate in Indian History at Sussex University, which included another year in India. I got to know some admirable Australian academics and got a three-year fellowship (working on India) to the Australian National University in Canberra in 1973. I married an Australian (we met at the National Archives of India in New Delhi), and I’m still in Australia, and still entangled with India fifty-one years later. In that time I’ve also worked at La Trobe University in Melbourne and the National University of Singapore.

I remain a wannabe jock – an addicted viewer of any activity where a puck is dropped or a ball (large or small, round or oval) is kicked, thrown, bounced, bowled or batted. My wife and I live in the old (1889) terrace we bought when I got a job in Melbourne in 1979. We have no kids, but do have visiting rights with five toddlers who are very good for maintaining flexibility. Better ‘n’ 5BX and they give me an excuse to go into the excellent toy store in our local shopping street.  (But you can’t beat, I find, an egg carton and a dozen ping pong balls. Keeps me entertained for hours…the kids like it too!)

My wife and I come to Canada every year or two, especially BC. The friends that we see go back to Vic High and CUSO days. It’s surprisingly easy to pick up with such people and find plenty to talk about, going back to the days when Victoria had a professional baseball team, the Royal Athletic Park caught fire, and the Totems won the BC high school basketball championship. The starting line-up, as I remember it, had Ash Valdal and Neil Worboys at guard, John Lauvaas and Rick Barnswell at forward, and Ken Gregory at Centre. Those names provide lots to talk about – you can forget Greek gods and the siege of Troy.

I hope the reunion goes well. If there are any photos or links you could tip me off where to find them. Meanwhile, do stay in touch.

Class of 1970 50th+ + + Reunion

Class of 1970    50th+ + + Reunion

by Linda Baker, VHS 1969

It definitely looks like it was worth the wait as the Class of 1970 finally held its 50th reunion. So many smiles and hugs and laughter and stories, it was a treat to be at the May 31 Meet & Greet at the Strathcona Hotel. Our enthusiastic Vic High Alumni merch team was there too – Mary Anne Skill and Shannon Edgar, VHS 1975 – representing the Alumni and selling branded items to attendees. And as all these folks were at Vic High when I was there, it was such fun to see so many (yes, still) familiar faces. (And how about that cake! Thrifty’s outdid themselves recreating the Vic High logo.)

Class of 1955 – 2022 Reunion

June 9, 2022, alumni gathered to connect and to share a few laughs. Irene Harrison, ‘Chief Reunion Organizer’ for the Class of 1955, ensured everything ran smoothly, and engaged alumni in a decision to donate reunion surplus funds to the Alumni to help restore the Vic High War Memorials.

Vic High Class of ’55 Celebrates 65th, Two Years Late

by Irene Harrison

All plans were in place to celebrate our 65th anniversary of our June 10th graduation in 1955. As the Class of ’55 has celebrated on June 10th for over 45 years, we were all looking forward to our “Big 65th” being held on June 10th, 2020. There were grads coming from Ontario, New Jersey, Washington State, Okanagan, Greater Vancouver, Qualicum and Nanaimo. Then, the pandemic hit.  All plans were off in the hopes of holding it in 2021.  Of course, that did not happen so plans were made for 2022.  As our members aged, we changed from a dinner to lunches for the past eight celebrations.  It was also easier for those who do not like to go out in the evening and also for those on the mainland and the island to travel in the morning and early afternoon.

As June 10th fell on a Friday this year, the date was changed to June 9th for easier travel.  As I contacted our grad list by email and those without email by telephone, I was sad to find out how many had passed away or were in ill health since our last contact two years ago.  With air travel and long lineups at airports, more were not planning to attend this year. The good news!  There were 37 in attendance at our lunch held at the Days Inn Banquet room on Gorge Road.  Some were spouses of grads and two were widows of grads who still wanted to stay connected with our fun group.

We shared so many memories looking at two tables of past reunion pictures.  Some pictures were “who is this person, I can’t remember their name”.  One picture was the original five ladies who met for lunch after a late-night call from Astrid Doidge saying “Do you know what tomorrow is? It is June 10th, we have to get together for lunch.”  One attendee asked who I was.  He was told “It is Irene”.  He answered “She sure has changed since graduation”.  That was 67 years ago!

After a couple of years some of the men found out how much fun we were having and asked if they could be invited.  From there it grew to having over 60 attending our June 10th dinners. There were memories of our 30th year reunion held at the old Crystal Gardens.  Our music was by Doc and the Doo-Wops playing all our favorite 50’s and 60’s songs. There were pictures of our 50th anniversary when 55 of us went on an Alaskan cruise.  We even participated in two stage shows on the ship.  One show there was eight of our ladies with a towel wrapped around our waists as “Splish Splash, I was taking a bath” was sung. Ed Longpre was in the tub on the stage.  Irene Harrison lip sang as Leslie Gore, singing “It’s my Party” while others danced on the stage.  How can you not have good memories of such a memorable trip and so much fun?  Joe Moore had us all gathered around the piano in the Crowsnest as we all sang Come Give a Cheer.

The best part of all these reunions was getting together with the committee to plan the upcoming celebration.  Gathering at one of the committee’s homes, having lunch and then someone remembering why we actually gathered.  Our committee consisted of Astrid Doidge, Buzz Harrison, Bud Rutherford, Irene Harrison, Maureen Moore, Georgina Harrison, Marie Longpre, Cecilia Ivatts, Lorraine Perry and Brian Turner.  Unfortunately, as we aged, we are down to four of the original committee.

The sad part of being MC at the lunch was advising every one of the passing of our grads since our last lunch in 2019.  Being in our mid 80’s this is to be expected but also very sad as we miss those who attended our celebration every year.  The good memories live on and lunches will still be planned as long as our ’55 grads are able to get together.

Vic High Class of 1972 50-Year Reunion

Vic High Class of 1972     50-Year Reunion

Hello, fellow Vic High Class of 1972 Grads! It’s hard to believe 50 years have gone by. Yet here we are, with all of our experience, pitfalls, successes and heart-felt moments to share. Our 50-Year Reunion is coming up! Sept. 23rd  is the MEET and GREET, Sept. 24th is the GRAD DINNER/ DANCE . BUY TICKETS SOON!  vichighclass72@shaw.ca

What we really want to know is How are you? Where are you? What is your story? And Will we see you at the reunion?

Here are three grad profiles to get the ball rolling: our 1972 valedictorian, Denis Blais. (You will also remember him from Calamity Players “The Edge of Nausea”. But it was his great wit and helpful smile that made us all fall in love with this guy!); Beth (Morrison) Barnes, our intrepid and reluctant chair of the 50th Reunion Committee (we really appreciate her hard work!); and yours truly, Anne Marie Webb-Hughes (better known as your Student News World Reporter and writer for our Calamity Players, “The Edge of Nausea”.)

We hope we can inspire you to send us your story. (vichighclass72@shaw.ca) 200 word max, please, plus two photos. Here’s some questions to prod your memory, but feel free to stray beyond these simple prompts:

  • What memory of Vic High stands out for you?
  • What have you been up to?
  • What would you say to your 18 year-old self???

Email your Grad picture if you have it and a fairly current picture, please.

Here we go!

Denis Blais

“I know I am not alone in my surprise and bewilderment that it has been a half century since we graduated! Although I have many fun memories of friends and adventure, my best memory of those mere two years at Vic High has to be the honour of being valedictorian – with Chris Chaleki at piano, those 3 songs we all still probably know by heart and of course – the after parties that had their share of even more fun and perhaps a few minor regrets!

I took Food 11 with Barb Armstrong as an easy elective in my final year, which included a trip to Malaspina College’s ( VIU ) Cook’s Training program. It was a “EUREKA” moment. I instantly saw a program that could provide a practical trade / career after University. The chef’s training facilitated an experience in Holland and Toronto. The plan for university was put on hold, and 50 years later I have enjoyed a fast-paced rewarding career as Chef. Over the years I have been Executive Chef at the Wedgewood (Vancouver), Canada Place for Expo 86, Shangrila, Kimpton Hotels and the last 20 years at the Capilano Golf and Country Club. I am currently trying hard to retire and enjoy a home that I built with my partner of 44 years in Greece. What would I say to my 18 – year-old self?? Time flies – so don’t sweat the small stuff, don’t smoke, and stay curious. There is much to discover!

Anne Marie Webb-Hughes

Life has not been dull!

My best memory of Vic High is sitting on the school heaters with Maureen (Wilkinson) Reiter in our cheerleading outfits eating Oh Henry’s and talking.

From graduation, I moved to Vancouver: 12 years with The Bay/ Simpsons working up to General Manager, Cosmetics in Toronto. I was head hunted to V.P. stores, La Vie En Rose, then Director of Marketing for Holt Renfrew (I sailed the Caribbean for a year), then took the leap back to Vancouver. Two businesses later, by then with a Masters of Education and a Masters of Business Administration, I joined the BCIT faculty. I taught in the Marketing program and was a contributing author to McGraw Hill Publishers Canadian Marketing text books, and taught overseas until retirement in 2019.

Now I am a Grandma, with two little girls and a third on the way, happily living back in Nanoose Bay with hubby Graham, enjoying the water. Phew! It’s been quite a ride.

To my 18-year-old self I’d say: Sleep is important, but good friends and a healthy lifestyle are right up there. Carp Diem!

Beth Barnes (Morrison)

My favourite memory at Vic High, I think, was watching the basketball games and the soccer team at Royal Athletic Park (I think they won a cup that was pretty exciting).

I started working at the TD Bank at Douglas and Fort Street right after I graduated and was there full-time until 1982 with a few part-time positions until 1986. I was a stay- at- home mom for 17 years and raised three children, as well as two twin stepchildren. I took a computer class at SJ Willis and re-entered the workforce in 2000 working for the federal government. I worked for a few different departments, and ended up working for old age pension, retiring  after 19 1/2 years. I’m now enjoying my retirement. Each day is a new adventure!

I would say to my old self: ”Be more confident and assertive”

(author’s note…she is selling herself short!  She has also been the point person for our 10th, 20th, 30th and 40th reunions, and managed to connect so many grads in many positive ways. Thanks, Beth!)

Black and Gold Dinner Caterer Former Vic High Student – Keith Campbell

Black & Gold Dinner

When the carver places the roast beef on your Black and Gold Dinner plate May 2020, , say hello to Keith Campbell, VHS 1987, owner of Fifteen Fifty’s Pub Style Restaurant catering the event.

Victoria-born Campbell grew up in the Broadmead area and his parents operated the Lantern House pizza restaurant, currently Il Greco Pizzeria on Tillicum Road and about to be redeveloped. Campbell attended Tillicum Elementary and Colquitz and Shoreline Junior High schools before enrolling at Vic High in Grade 11 to take part in the auto-body program, still the only one available in the District.

His motivation to succeed must have been instilled early, because he had to come all the way from Sidney to attend Vic High. Housed at the time in the old now-demolished Fairey Tech building, Campbell excelled in the auto-body program, and was awarded a post-secondary scholarship to Camosun College in the trade. By the end of his first year however, he left the program. A few of his classmates’ friends had died from exposure to spray-paint chemicals, and he decided the risk was not one he’d take.

Campbell had experience as a food server and eventually found work as a bartender at Squid Row in Sidney, where he eventually became manager and then general manager. He was unsuccessful in his attempts to join the ownership at Squid Row, so began looking around for business opportunities.

In 1994 with his parents’ help he opened Fifteen Fifty’s, taking over what was Natasha’s Pacific Grill, formerly the Hungarian Village Restaurant. 25 years later, though he remembers well the struggle to build clientele, his business is still growing.

“I’ve been very, very lucky in my life,” said Campbell, looking back at his days at Vic High until now. He also spoke glowingly of his two daughters and two grandchildren and credited his parents and some influential Vic High teachers for contributing to his success.

Ed Wignall, Auto Body, Bud Brice, Metalwork, Bruce Malczeski, Social Studies, and Linda Shevloff, English were among his favourite teachers. Campbell also remembered some of his high-school buddies, Andy Corbett, Brent McKnight, Bill McClung and Neil Meija. In fact, Meija is currently his kitchen manager at 1550s.

He recalled one day at Vic High when an announcement came over the PA asking for the owner of a red Honda Civic to report the school office because his or her car was on fire. One of Campbell’s friends had accidently started the blaze in Campbell’s vehicle. “I loved Vic High. It was a great school.” Perhaps it was that school experience that still inspires him to support the community by contributing to school projects.

And finally, to Doug Puritch.  We finally drew your name!  Your prize is in the mail.

Eric Earl has created a VHS69 Google drive, so hopefully anybody with the link can upload stuff. He says:  I have an EVENT folder there –  pictures and a video of Linda talking to the crowd. You can upload a whole folder from your computer if you have writeable access. Give it a shot!  Did anybody record the band which I could use for a video of photos, etc?   Here’s the link:

1977 – 40th Reunion 2017

On September 1st, 2016 the 1977 Grad Committee for the 40th reunion started, the first meeting was held mid-November,  it started out with approximately 15 members and finished off with 23, we as a group got along extremely well, we decided to hold it at Victoria High School, and picked August 26th 2017 as our Date, we decided a one night only event, and put our efforts to make a night to remember, and as it turned out , It was more than a night, it exceeded all the committee’s expectations. The notices went out early March of 2017, the numbers of the Grads and guests, including former Teachers and Alumni, surpassed 180 people. We had Lorrie Allen (Collins), with her Husband Fred, all the way from New Zealand, Bill Hitchcox, and his wife Brenda,  from North Carolina, Bill Booth, from Halifax Nova Scotia, Donna Thompson, from I believe Manitoba, Leif Lassen From Yellowknife, Many from Alberta, the interior and mainland of B.C, and of course numerous grads from up Island and Victoria area.

The night started off with a social from 5-6, Dinner 6-7:30 in the concourse area, Catered by Moonlight catering, and Dancing and socializing in the Gym,with a surprise visit by Elvis,   well over 60 door prizes were donated by local businesses, we did our own bar, and hired 3 bartenders, and all proceeds were donated to the Alumni association, I believe approximately $3,100.00. It was truly a night to remember. Our 77 grad class face book sight is an open site, have a look, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1618882225076183/

Dancing in the gym –we were amazed many stayed till closing at 1:00AM, shuttle bus transportation was supplied for all.

Hope to see many of you at the 45th reunion; the planning is already in the works.

1956 – 60 Year Reunion 2016

VHS CLASS OF ’56 CELEBRATES

Three dozen members of the Class of 1956 gathered for a 60th reunion lunch at the UVic University Club on 2 June 1916. Although most came from Victoria or the Lower Mainland, some arrived from as far away as Phoenix, AZ, Toronto, ON and Edmonton, AB. The occasion sprang from a class member wondering aloud three months previously, ‘Is our class getting together this year? We had such successful 40th and 50th reunions!’ Emails began flying between five classmates. Our Alumni President (and fellow classmate), Barry Gough provided an emailing list and the occasion took on a life of its own without the challenge of arranging and or attending meetings.

Many attendees had been to previous reunions, although one was a first-timer. All were complimented by the remark of our University Club waitress who found it hard to believe that such an active and animated group were actually celebrating the 60th anniversary of their high school graduation! After lunch Michiel Horn amused the assembly with a ‘The Way It Was Then’ presentation. As the group broke up, some continued socializing, others went to tour the school and visit the Alumni Center.

With its modest registration fee of $50, the Class of ’56 was still able to send a cheque for $388, what remained in its treasury, to the Alumni Association in support of the Stadium Revitalization Project. The class is actively anticipating its 65th in 2021!

100th Celebration – 2014

Celebrating the Vic High Building’s 100th Anniversary – May 16-19, 2014

DSC07708 In May 2014, about 1000 Vic High alumni and guests gathered to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our present Vic High building. It became the fourth building to house Vic High when it opened in April 1914.

IMG_3202

This event was the school’s third major event of this kind, following the 1976 centennial of the founding of the school, and “Vic High 125” in 2001. Like those previous celebrations, the 2014 event was sponsored by the Alumni Association and organized by a committee of volunteers. The hard-working committee was chaired by Alan Lowe (VHS 1979), former Prime Minister of Vic High’s student parliament and former mayor of Victoria.

The fun actually began on Thursday May 15 with a separate-but-related event. This was the inaugural Black and Gold Dinner, held to honour four Vic High alumni who have created national and international reputations in the fields of athletics, cultural history, journalism, and visual art. Click on Black and Gold Dinner in the Navigation panel at right to access a write-up and photos.

DSC07605 IMG_3148 Classroom

On the evening of Friday May 16, about a thousand Alumni and guests gathered at a Wine
and Cheese evening at the school. A major attraction was a series of heritage photos lining the hallway from the Vic High Archives in Room 100 to the new Fairey Tech foyer where registration and souvenir sales took place. Photo displays were also mounted in the Fairey Tech foyer and the main hall, all on a “then and now” theme, in addition to permanent displays around the balcony of the Old (Roper) Gym.

In both gyms, grads mingled, found old friends, and remembered when. A special treat awaited in Room 303, half of which had been converted into a 1914-era classroom; current Vic High drama students, in period costume, played a scene involving a teacher and three students of the era.

On Saturday afternoon, grads gathered again at the school for an Open House. Many wandered the halls to view archival displays they had missed the night before. In the Lawrie Wallace Auditorium, a lively program entertained a full house. It began with original musical skits performed by alumni from the classes of 1960-62, entitled “A Day in the Life of Vic High.” Then there were official welcomes from Victoria mayor Dean Fortin, Alumni chair Dr. Barry Gough, school board chair Peg Orcherton, and former Vic High principal Dave Watkins, whose grandfather C. Elwood Watkins was architect of the present Vic High building.

Opening  DSCF5202

Current students were represented by Vic High’s “Platform 61” dancers, under the direction of teacher Kerry Krich. Finally, the Reunion Orchestra, featuring members of the celebrated Vic High Orchestra of the 1950s and ‘60s, joined with current Vic High strings players in a mixed program of classical hits and popular instrumental pieces. Their legendary conductor Dorothy Evans was not able to attend, but she took part via a phone call from the stage!

DanceOrchestraDSC00053 photo 5 (4)

On Saturday night, over 300 grads attended a nostalgic dance at the Crystal Garden. Music was provided all evening by the amazing Vic High Rhythm and Blues Band, under the direction of its founder and leader Eric Emde. But times have changed at the Crystal, so no one got thrown into the pool!

Sunday was set aside for individual grad classes to organize their own reunions. Taking advantage of this opportunity, at various venues around town, were the grad classes of 1959, 1964, 1968, 1970 and 1979. You can read reports of their events on this website – see Navigation panel at right.

On Monday Vic High was represented in the traditional Victoria Day parade – most of us remember being taken to that parade as children, and it is still going strong. The Vic High R&B band was a startling and delightful contrast to the many marching bands that always appear in this parade. Also appearing was Vic High’s electric truck that was converted from gas to battery power, a project of students in the Environment Club and the Career Prep Auto Body program.

IMG_3386 IMG_3402

The weekend was a success in many ways, one of which was financial. Thanks to both registrants and sponsors, the event produced a surplus of almost $40,000, which will be directed toward the Alumni Association’s Vic High Stadium renewal project.

So many people helped make this a memorable event, but we’d like to mention a few of the hardest-working folks on the committee: in addition to chair Alan Lowe and principal Randi Falls, thanks must go to treasurer Bob Whitmore (VHS 1967), registrar Margaret Goodwin (VHS 1964), volunteer coordinator Lesley Quin (VHS 1972), dinner chair Anne McKeachie (VHS 1968), entertainment coordinator Don Kissinger (VHS 1959), and souvenir coordinators JoAnne Botten and Mary Ann Roueche (both VHS 1968). The group presenting “A Day in the Life of Vic High” was led by Russ Leech (VHS 1960). The Archives team was led by Debbie Blackie and Linda Smith (both VHS 1967), and the 1914 classroom project created by Kathryn McAllister (VHS 2009), Heather Ashton and Anne Boldt (both VHS 1967).

What a weekend!

Black and Gold Dinner – 2014

2014 First Annual Black and Gold Dinner

For the past year the Alumni Association has been compiling a list of illustrious alumni. While this is still a “work in progress,” we took advantage of the centenary of the current Vic High building to showcase the outstanding accomplishments of four of our amazing grads.

On Thursday May 15, 2014, we held a dinner at the Wardroom at CFB Esquimalt to recognize (L-R): Richard Hunt, class of 1971; Dr. Maria Tippett, class of 1962; Jessica Monroe-Gonin, class of 1984; and Jim Taylor, class of 1955. (See details below.)

140 people enjoyed an amazing celebration on a beautiful evening at the Wardroom with spectacular views overlooking the ocean! The Vic High Pop Choir was in typically fine form, entertaining during the cocktail hour. Keith McCallion masterfully emceed the event. The Minister of Education attended and in his remarks congratulated the honoured guests, while saluting our great school and Alumni Association in this centenary of our current building. The School District and Board of Trustees were well represented, with the Board Chair, Peg Orcherton, Class of ’73, also offering words of congratulations to the honourees and acknowledging the school and Alumni Association. Five past Principals were in attendance along with many former staff, alumni from the ’40s to ’90s, current students and staff, and friends and family of the honourees. Current students Eric Buhne, Saali-aa Edgar, Krysteena White and Tristan Pakosh joined Alumni Association directors Roger Skillings, Fred Packford, Denis Johnston and King Lee to present video tributes and introduce each honouree. The responses from those who attended have been full of accolades for a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining evening – and we are already looking forward to the next one!

Detailed Reunion Planning

Detailed Reunion Planning

Reunion planning will be fun! Like a mini-reunion if this is the first one you’re planning for your class.

Form a Reunion Committee

A core local team of dedicated and enthusiastic individuals will be those most motivated to ensure a successful reunion. A reunion chair arranges meetings and circulates agendas. A treasurer will create a working budget and handle finances. A secretary records and circulates minutes, notes, Action Items. A registrar co-ordinates the search for missing grads and handles registration for the events. Beyond these 4, the more volunteers the better, who can actively participate and work on various reunion tasks. There may be more to do than you first realize, so more help is important.

When do we start?
It’s best to give yourself 12-16 months to plan. Some start up to two years in advance. It depends on how elaborate an event you want, but the more time the better. Many of your classmates need enough lead time to plan travel, etc. And prime locations and services you want often book up early.

Where do we start?
Check out Upcoming Reunions and Past Reunions on this website for ideas. Contact the alumni’s Reunion Co-ordinator for info and advice.  They will provide you with a spreadsheet of all alumni registered for your year, with whatever contact info is available for each. If you share this on something like GoogleDrive or DropBox, you can update the list collaboratively, add tracking columns like # of tickets, tickets paid, etc. Then return the updated form to the Reunion Co-ordinator afterwards so we can update our alumni database. Sample forms for registration, budget planning, and silent auction are here as well. Make sure you have alumni register on this website if they’re not already there.

How often should we meet?
Once a month works for most. Virtual meetings can allow out-of-town alumni to help. Zoom or Skype or conference calls. Most tasks are done virtually anyway.

When should we have our reunion?
Weekends are best, and most reunions happen spring through late fall. Thanksgiving can be popular as many out-of-towners may be home visiting family. Think about the age and life stage of your classmates. Is weather a factor? Is summer better when school is out? People do like to tour Vic High, so check with the school as summer tours may still be an option. Note: Seismic upgrades and renovations are expected to complete by summer 2022. Until then, there is no access to Vic High.

Should we have a single day or multi-day event?
Some classes just have a one evening reunion event while other classes host multi-day reunions. Those classmates who have attended reunions repeatedly echo the same words after the reunion is over – “the evening went by too fast” – “there just wasn’t enough time to talk with everyone I wanted to.” How do you pack 5, 10, 20, 30 years of each other’s lives inside of 5 hours? The answer is you can’t. Hosting a multi-day reunion however gives your classmates additional time to relax and get reacquainted. This is also a far more attractive option for those travelling from afar to attend the reunion. It may involve a little more work to host a multi-day reunion but offers many advantages to your classmates.

Friday Night Ideas
Many classes kick off their reunion activities with an informal Friday night get-together to get reacquainted. Depending on the expected attendance, these could be held at a local restaurant or bar or for larger crowds, book a venue. Most keep this event simple –  serve light appetizers and provide a cash bar. If this event isn’t offered, your invitations can always include a suggestion to simply gather at a local bar or pub – ideally one with a separate room. Fernwood Inn is a great supporter of Vic High, and along with many fond memories…has a large private room that holds up to 60 people.

Saturday Ideas
While the evening is typically reserved for the big event, consider adding some daytime activities. One of the most popular ones is a tour of the school. (Vic High is scheduled to re-open September 2022 once seismic upgrades and renovations are complete.) A pre- or post-tour informal gathering at the Fernwood Inn is often included in some classes’ plans. Another options might be a morning golf outing or a local sightseeing tour, a classic car cruise, or even a scavenger hunt to old haunts.

No matter what pre-reunion events you plan, don’t underestimate their value in terms of making classmates more comfortable attending the reunion event. They all help people get reacquainted, or acquainted for the first time, and  can help make the big event a smashing success.

Sunday Ideas
Some classes also plan a casual wind-down event, a chance for any catching up and saying goodbyes in a less hectic atmosphere. It could be a fun family event that includes spouses and kids.

Reunion Activity Ideas
If you are planning an evening event, it may include a meal and some musical entertainment, depending on what you feel your alumni would enjoy. Be sure to include some opening remarks, tributes to classmates who have passed on, recognition of school couples still together. Prize draws can be fun, too, with silly – or serious – prizes, for silly or serious categories.  But leave lots of free socializing time. Buffet meal service can be a good way to keep people mingling more.

A continuously running slide show of old school photos is always a great attraction. A nostalgia table to view memorabilia and artifacts is a great way to jog faded memories and spark discussions. Ask each guest to bring some personal memorabilia for the nostalgia display. If you want to encourage dancing, make sure your music provider plays music from your era.

What are some upfront expenses we might incur?

Stationery supplies, postage, printing (reunion booklets, name tags), gifts / novelties, decorations, website development & hosting, liability insurance, reunion facilities deposit, entertainment deposit, deposits for additional activities (tours, etc), monthly fees for a Class of ____ bank account.

Ask your committee members for their registration fees early to provide start-up funds, or offer an Early Bird price for early registrations. Seek sponsors and donations. Or include a Silent Auction to increase revenue.

Running the events
You might consider asking friends or family members to handle things like registration or bar service (if you run the bar – which can be a way to help cover expenses.)  Or make arrangements with volunteers from the class year ahead of you or behind you in exchange for providing this service at their reunion. They’ll know some of your guests, and it could be fun. (Some classes invite alumni from years before and after theirs, or invite volunteers from those years to collaborate on producing the events.) And lastly,

make sure there is a plan in place for the end of each event for the clean-up and collecting of memorabilia, lost and found, etc. Nobody wants to do this job alone, and most people are more than willing to help.

What decisions need to be made?

  • choose event formats, venue(s), dates
  • recommended lodging (near venues, etc.)
  • programs for each event – speakers, tributes, etc
  • timeline and logistics list for every event
  • finances
  • classmate contact listing
    • Contact Reunions for a class list in spreadsheet format
    • use spreadsheet collaboratively online to update as you contact people and find more to add
    • divide up the list for initial phoning or email contact
    • search for missing classmates (Canada 411, Facebook, internet search)
  • website development / maintenance / updating – some set up their own Facebook page too
  • decorations / displays, entertainment, tribute awards, event swag, registration / name tags
  • silent auction items, door prizes
  • marketing & communications
    • mailers, emailings
    • newspaper and internet advertising (Facebook, website)
  • tribute to deceased classmates
  • additional reunion activities – school tours, picnics, golf, classic car cruises, scavenger hunts to old haunts, etc
  • class / reunion donation to Alumni Association (supports scholarships, school amenities), or to school to fill a particular current need

1959 – 55th Year Reunion

The Class of ’59 held our 55th Reunion

at the Gorge Vale Golf Club,

Sunday May 18, 2014

1968 – 45th Reunion

The infamous Vic High Class of ’68 had another successful reunion….someone mentioned it was our 45th but they might have been talking about our age?!?!?

Hermann’s Jazz Club was the perfect venue…funky, fun and fabulous. Hermann’s is a throw back in time …kind of like us.  Thank you Hermann for generously allowing us to use your club for our reunion.  Also a huge thank you goes to Nan Force Artnzen for all of her help.

Hung right alongside Hermann’s jazz memories were our Class of ’68 memorabilia courtesy of Jackie Dobbyn Martin.  Sandi Mottishaw Duncan and Jackie created jazzy centerpieces to bring some good old black and gold into the venue.  Joe Lindo’s DVD of photos from our ’68 Camosun ran on two TV’s.

The evening started with a lively Happy Hour as grads mixed, mingled, bid at the Silent Auction and bought VHS Wear.  Thank you Pat Bourne Nalleweg for organizing the Silent Auction and many thanks to those who donated and bought. The Silent Auction brought in over $2000.  Thank you to Marlene Dahl for handling the VHS Wear orders.

Group photos were a challenge for our photographer, Peter Nalleweg, but another opportunity for us to laugh and visit. A link to the photos can be found on our website http://vichigh68.wordpress.com/

Our notorious Buffet-line Challenge was interesting this year as grads fought over who got to wear the reading glasses to see the clues.  We want those photos of two Class of ’68 grads kissing!!!!  Send them right now to vichigh68@gmail.com

Our buffet dinner was fabulous!  Thank you Goldstream Catering and we wish you good luck in your retirement.

As dinner ended the Attic Boys took the stage and really got the party started.  People were quickly on their feet dancing.  Thank you Rod McCrimmon, Dave Hill, Rob Lifton (’67) and we missed you Bob Brown.

After a short break the Vic High Rhythm and Blues Band took over and instantly blew the roof off of Hermann’s.  Eric Emde and his students are exceptional and we truly enjoyed every minute of their performance.  The dance floor was packed.  One of our grads, Gary Kirk, decided to Pass the Hat to get a little extra for the band to help cover the costs of their recent trip to Memphis.  He quickly had $360 when Jim Crawford said he and John Turner would match whatever Gary could collect.  Bob Hissink speedily brought the pot to $500 and the Crawford/Turner clan matched that to make it $1000.  The Class of ’68 will also be giving the band an honorarium in appreciation of the great night of entertainment they provided us.

Please mark the May 16th– 19th, 2014 as our next chance to get together at the Celebration of the 100th Birthday of the current Vic High building.  If you have any suggestions or ideas of how we, the Class of ’68, can celebrate either on or off site please send them along to us at vichigh68@gmail.com .   Check the Vic High Alumni website often for further details as they become available. http://vichigh.com/vic-highs-building-turns-100-years

Thanks to all that participated in our 45th Reunion and we’ll look forward to seeing you again next year!

Mary Ann, Pat, JoAnne and Daryl

1972 – 40th Year Reunion

Our reunion was a great success and everyone that attended seemed to have a good time and was glad they attended. We had 83 people (63 grads) come to the Friday night event at the Comfort Hotel on Blanshard St. We had quite a few people turn up for the tour of the school on Saturday afternoon. One teacher came – Mr. Camp.  We had 106 people attend the dinner/dance (66 grads) which was held at the Chief and Petty Officers’ Mess in Esquimalt.  The food was wonderful and the view was fabulous.  People were very impressed with the venue.

Our group photo turned out well and if any one wishes to get a copy they can contact Jesse Hlady Photography http://jessehlady.com (250) 888 9079.

If anyone is interested in seeing pictures of the reunion please email vichighclass72@shaw.ca

Class of 1955

The Class of 1955 usually has a dinner each year on June 10. This is the day we graduated so it is held on the same date every year no matter what day of the week it falls on. We have been doing this since 1962 and at our last dinner we had over 70 people attend. On our 50th year celebration, we went on an Alaskan cruise. We have a phoning committee and we send emails to those class members who have given us their address.

Please get in touch with Irene Harrison at  250-727-0097 or email at irenehar@shaw.ca to get more info on this luncheon or on future reunions.

1971 – 40 Year Reunion

Grad ’71 40 year reunion in 2011:

Well, it must’ve been a party – Grad’s of 71 are already offering to volunteer for the next reunion extravaganza so hold on to your hat!  That would be 2016 so be sure to mark your calendars now.  The 40 year bash at the Langford Legion was attended (unbelievably) by grads from Terrace! Denman Island! Whitehorse! Calgary! Washington State! Nova Scotia! Honeymoon Bay! McKenzie! Lower Mainland!  and Christchurch New Zealand for Heaven’s Sakes!…  that’s just a small sample but you get the idea.

Nice round numbers in the vicinity of 150 partiers along with Mr. Blasner, Mr. Runer, Mr.Sutcliffe and Mr. Newell with his trusty better half struggling to maintain order as the dinner progressed through meet and greet, eat meat and greet, group photo, door prizes, dancing with friends to great music and then meeting some more.  Some of the meeting and greeting had to spill out of doors as the weather was warm, the day long, the band a little loud and the opportunity to catch up all too short.

Pretty much everybody felt that 10 years is too long to wait for the next one so here’s a heads up to stay in touch, notify the committee if your email changes and stay tuned for further developments.

1974 – 40 Year Reunion

Our Reunion was a chance to see classmates and friends to connect or reconnect.  An informal dinner was held on Saturday, September 20th, 2014 at Darcy’s Pub in Langford.

If you have questions, comments, or information on other classmates please send them to lahappy@telus.net or call Lori Ann Locken 250-474-4732.

We are trying to locate as many fellow classmates as possible. We would like email addresses for our communication list.  It would be really helpful if you could spread the word to our other classmates.

1979 – 30 Year Reunion

The Class of ’79 held its 30 Year Reunion on August 22, 2009, at a hobby farm! Over 100 class members attended for a great day outside in the sunshine. A BBQ event (supplied by the Lions Club) offered lots of food including burgers, salmon, salads and many desserts, as well as beer kegs and flowing wine. There was line dancing (outdoors of course), a slideshow of former reunions, and photo displays. Many attendees commented that this was the best reunion so far, thanks to the more casual environment. We had so much fun that we’ve had requests to organize a get-together annually!
Kudos to grad committee members who made this great event happen: Adianne (Skinner) Askew and family (who supplied the farm!), Soren Henrich, Jean (Trumble) Kerfers, Alan Lowe, Jackson Low, Kelly Speak and Shirley Young.

1974 – 35 Year Reunion

The Class of ’74 held its 35th reunion on November 7, 2009, at the Bird of Paradise Pub. Grads celebrated by catching up with their old (?) classmates, enjoying tasty appetizers, and dancing to the great sounds of the band Rewind. Plans were discussed to get together again in 2011: interested grads please email Lori Ann Locken, lahappy@shaw.ca

1969 – 40 Year Reunion

Class of ’69
Over 100 enthusiastic grads came together on October 3, 2009 to celebrate our 40 Year Reunion.
Activities started early on this sunny Saturday as some played golf at the Prospect Lake course while others putted and laughed their way through Blenkinsop Valley Mini-golf. Afterward, many gathered for refreshments at the Fernwood Inn before attending the reunion festivities at the Vic High Gym .
The 1969 grads always like to have fun and they heartily participated in Music Bingo, dancing, catching up, picture taking and the delicious buffet. All agreed that it was a great time, and this well-preserved group looks forward to its 50 year reunion!
Money was raised for donations to the Vic High Archives and the Vic High Alumni Association. The next get-together event is the 60th birthday party planned for October 2011; time and place TBA.
Grads, please remember to keep your contact information current through the Vic High Alumni Association website, www.vichigh.com.

1968 – 41st Reunion

Class of ’68

Whoa, the Class of ’68 still remembers how to party – and proved it at our 40+1 Reunion
on the weekend of June 5-6 2009. The Wardroom at CFB Esquimalt was the perfect venue
for  Friday night Welcome Reception, silent and live auctions, buffet dinner and dancing to the wonderful Vic High R&B Band.  A nostalgic Open House was held at the school on Saturday with entertainment by the Vic High Dancers and our very own Attic Boys Band. The day concluded with a well-attended Happy Hour at the Fernwood Inn. The best part of the weekend for everyone was the opportunity to reconnect with old classmates and initiate new friendships.

The Reunion Committee would like to thank everyone who came, contributed, sponsored, danced, laughed, partied, bid at the auction and promised to attend our collective 60th Birthday Party in 2010! We had an enjoyable year planning the Reunion and it was so rewarding to see the weekend unfold with such success. Our heartfelt thanks go to DundeeWealth – Joe D’Aurizio and Joe and Mary Lindo – for being the Event Sponsors. Their sponsorship enabled us to have a first-class reunion that our grads are still raving about.

The 40+1 Reunion was a financial success as well. The event produced a surplus, raising significant funds for the Vic High Alumni Association. In fact, we’re told that no other class reunion has ever raised so much: $5000 was donated to the Alumni Association through the Class of ’68 Sponsorship program, plus $3000 in proceeds from the auction, for a total of $8000! Of course, all funds donated to the Alumni Association will be used to support programs for students at Vic High. The Reunion Committee has also established the “Class of ’68 Fund” which will be put to good use for future reunions, parties and donations. The Class of ’68 is an amazing group of people – thank you so much for your generosity.

1962 – 65th Birthday

Class of ’62

The class of 1962 held a party in November to celebrate our collective 65th birthday, with a group of forty (plus spouses) enjoying wine and cheese at the Uplands Golf Club. Most were studying name tags to recall old acquaintances, and some interesting “meet and greet” encounters took place!

The reunion organizing committee encourages you to update your contact info on the Alumni Association website (www.VicHigh.com) to ensure an invitation to our upcoming 50th reunion in late June of 2012. Or you can also contact one of the committee members directly: Vicky (Rigby) Berry golf99@shaw.ca; Bill Hoyt bhoyt@shaw.ca; Linda Bell ladybug01@shaw.ca; or Rob Peacey robpeacey@shaw.ca

1968 – 60th Birthday Bash

The Vic High Class of ’68 celebrated their collective 60th birthdays together on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. The sun came out to welcome 80 of us onto the outside deck and lawns where we spent time catching up on news, visiting, mingling, having fun and enjoying appetizers with our summer drinks.

Dinner was held in the lounge at the Club, which was resplendent in birthday decor including beautiful scrapbook pages of the previous year’s 40 + 1 Reunion, birthday hats, trivia centrepieces, candles and self-popping balloons. We were entertained as tables competed for their position in the buffet line. We saw everything from rabbit balloon blowing to trios singing for their dinner. Who knew 60-year-olds could move, blow, rap, and check so well!

A Silent Auction was held to ensure the Class of ’68 Legacy Fund remains intact to support future events and initiatives! Our class was once again able to make a donation to the Alumni Association by purchasing four seats in the Lawrie Wallace Auditorium totalling $800. We are pleased to announce that one of these seats will specifically to commemorate our 40+1 Reunion, with an inscription reading “ Class of ’68, 40+1 Reunion, June 5 & 6, 2009.”

As dinner finished we lit cupcakes, joined in singing “Happy Birthday,” then danced the night away to the music of our very own band ‒The Attic Boys.

1970 – 40th Year Reunion

Over 200 graduates and partners from the Class of 1970 gathered in Victoria on the weekend of May 28, 2010, for the 40th anniversary of Grad ’70. The celebrations all took place in the Vic High catchment area and included a glittering gala at the Union Club of British Columbia on Friday and a school assembly and “after-school brew” at the Fernwood Inn on Saturday. Sunday attendees had their choice of graduate-led events: either a walking tour through the historic Fernwood district or kayaking in the Inner Harbour.

The weekend reunited old friends, rekindled old memories and raised a whopping $4000 for the Vic High Alumni Association. The psychedelic poster created for the reunion, designed by graduate Gregory Hartnell in the classic style of a 1960s rock concert handbill, was featured on the front cover of the official program. For pictures and more details of the Class of 1970 reunion, visit our website at www.vichigh70.com. (this link is no longer active)

1965 – 45th Year Reunion

On September 18, 2010, a group of ’65 grads gathered in Vic High’s cafeteria from 1 to 4 pm. Charts with photos from Central, Lansdowne, S.J. Willis and Vic High yearbooks were displayed on the cafeteria walls, and the committee donated refreshments for the event. There was laughter and chatter as people mingled, and it was especially gratifying to see some “first time” graduates attending.

The class of ’65 donated $750 toward the Vic High Alumni Association’s scholarship and bursary funds. This amount came from donations at the door, a contribution from the committee, and an appreciative gift of $500 from a graduate who was unable to attend.

1960 – 50th Year Reunion

The Victoria High School Class of 1960 held its 50th year reunion in Victoria on September 10, 11, and 12, 2010. The three-day, four-event reunion was attended by 112 grads and guests.

The reunion commenced on Friday night with a meet-and-greet at the Chiefs and Petty Officers Mess at CFB Esquimalt. The grads were welcomed with a banner across the stage and the mess was decorated with Vic High shields and bands of black and gold.

A slide show of our time featured events at and around the grand old school backed by the music we all love and remember. Grads enjoyed reuniting with old friends and flames and browsing through the Memorabilia Display which featured many pictures, annuals, records, clothing and articles of our time.

Saturday morning found us in Vic High Auditorium where the grads ‒ along with former teachers Tommy Mayne, Reg Reid and Colin Glover ‒ were entertained by the Calamity Players presentation of a musical skit written by Russ Leech entitled “A Day in the Life of Vic High.” The words of the 13 songs were rewritten to be relevant to the theme and were backed by a three-piece band featuring the talents of Rick Acres, Frank Kiefer and John Polkinghorne (a guest from Esquimalt High). The performances of John Roberts, Heather McFarlane, Ken Hicks, Judy Gill, John Britt, Kathy Hatch, Russ Leech and Jo Humber, and guest Rino Elverhoy, were well received and enjoyed by all. The highlight came when the fog machine overreacted and filled the stage and auditorium with a thick cloud. Nonetheless, the cast carried on in the true tradition of the theatre!

A brown bag lunch was served in the lunchroom with much socializing, storytelling and picture taking. The teachers especially were sought out as lunch companions, and from all reports were overcome by the affection shown them by their former students. After lunch everyone gathered on the steps of the Girls Entrance for a group picture. Then, the grads roamed the halls and classrooms of our dear old school, reminiscing of days gone by but not forgotten.

On Saturday evening a gala dinner was held in the Officers’ Wardroom at CFB Esquimalt. Following dinner, folks were asked to come to the open mike to deliver 3-minute stories of our friends and times. The stories were extremely funny and interesting. The grads were treated to a hilarious visit by The Queen (Lois Gow) followed by another of Lois’s characters, Miss Swizzleteats, both of which left us with sides hurting from laughter. The night was capped with dancing and conversation.

Sunday morning found us at the home of Barry and Jill Slagboom for a yard party featuring brunch, games, and a song circle where a great time was had by all (despite some rain). After many hours of friendship and song we finally said our good-byes, while clutching our souvenirs and vowing to meet again at future gatherings.

1955 – 55th Year Reunion, 2010

Our 55 year reunion was held on successive nights in June 9 and 10, 2010. It was very successful with a large turnout for both nights.

On Friday night, 54 grads and guests people attended a cocktail party at the Odd Fellows Hall on Douglas Street. On Saturday night, 80 people plus our special guest Tommy Mayne attended a wonderful dinner at the Gorge Vale Golf Course. There were many displays and photographs from past reunions, as well as yearbook pictures of everyone who had graduated. We had a donation jar where we collected enough money to buy two seats chairs in the Vic High Auditorium.

Out of town attendees from United States included Professor Stewart Smith from Princeton, New Jersey and Dugald Macfadyen from Foristell, Missouri. We also had grads come from Ontario, Quebec, the BC mainland, and up-island.

Dick Pomeroy, the President of our Student Council came from Vancouver to enjoy the reunion.

The Vic High ’55 class has a dinner every year on June 10 and always has a good turnout. We are known as the grad class who has the most fun.

The hard-working committee members who planned our event are: Astrid Doidge, Irene Harrison, Maureen Moffat, Brian Turner, Georgina Harrison, Bud Rutherford, Bill Ozard, Joe Moore, Marie Longpre, Cecilia Ivatts, Lorraine Perry and Audrey Howe.

1950 – 60th Year Reunion

On Wednesday May 13, 2010, we gathered to celebrate our 1950 graduation from Victoria High School. Thirty-eight people attended: half from the Metro Vancouver area: the other half from Victoria and environs. A private space was reserved in the Buffet Room of the Richmond River Rock Casino which proved to be most suitable. The buffet was excellent.

The general consensus was that 60 years ago we were generally prepared to face the world but the world may not have been prepared for us.

It was a spirited and joyous gathering with much reminiscing, nostalgia and re-connecting with old friends. As always, the time ran out before one could get to chat with everyone. Thanks for those who journeyed from Vancouver Island for this event.

Jeanne Elliot presented Hamish Robertson with a prize for traveling the greatest distance to attend and to Ted Bird for being married the longest.

Planning is already underway for the next celebration. Victoria next?

1940 – 70th Year Reunion

Grads of 1940 gathered on Wednesday May 19, 2010, at the Uplands Golf Course for their 70th year reunion. It was a perfect setting and a wonderful day. Oh yes ‒ there were canes and walkers and even wheel chairs along with members of the family that came to make sure that Mom and Dad did not take a misstep.

Yes, we have aged over these many years but we still had that desire and love for the old high school that kept calling us back.

Our classmates came from California, Washington State, Ontario, up-Island, Powell River, various parts of the Mainland and the Okanagan area, and of course Greater Victoria. Many others desired to be with us but the travel distance was too forbidding. We brought back memories of those old school days, some things we could not even recall that they had happened but that did not matter ‒ still good for a laugh!

So we talked and brought back memories and soon the years had slipped away once again. A few hours of enjoying each other’s company and the afternoon closed with the singing of the two songs that had become so much a part of our lives way back when, “White Cliffs of Dover” and “We’ll Meet Again.” Will we meet again? There is a suggestion but we will just have to wait and see!

Homecoming – 2008

Homecoming for Grads from the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s

June 14, 2008, the Vic High Alumni Association held a Homecoming for pre-1950 alumni. Hundreds came, reminisced, got reacquainted, and filled the school with joy, laughter, and fond memories of those who have passed. A great event!

Reunion Planning in a Nutshell

Reunion Planning in a Nutshell

  • Start planning up to two years in advance. Recruit a chair, treasurer, secretary and registrar. Others can be recruited later as you decide on what you need.
  • Create a generic email address (for example, vichigh1969@gmail.com). It’s better security and easy to forward to whomever you choose and change the forwarding in the future.
  • Set up a bank account in the name of your event, or something like Vic High Class of 1969. It’s more easily managed and easily transferred to new team members in the future by changing signing authority. If you’re a larger committee, the account should have two or three signatories.
  • Regular meetings are fun – like mini reunions! It’s always helpful to circulate agenda items before and notes/minutes after. Use Skype or Zoom if you can’t meet in person
  • The Alumni Reunion Co-ordinator can provide a spreadsheet of your year’s alumni with whatever contact info we have available. This can be saved in a Google Drive and by adding missing names from your Camosun, it becomes a Master List to share and update as you all find more alumni. Alumni are anyone who attended, whether or not they graduated. Teachers and staff may also appreciate being invited. Some classes invite alumni from years before and/or after theirs.
  • The Past Reunions page links you to other reunions. It’s always fun to see what others have done at their reunions.
  • Decide on date and venue early and send out a Save the Date email. It’s always good to book entertainment early as well.
  • Contact the Vic High Archives & Museum to see what can be loaned out, and what info and materials they may have on your year.
  • The Alumni Communications Team can send out mass emails on your behalf to your classmates whose email is on file. Contact Communications from the drop-down menu here. You provide information and photos if you have any from past reunions, or we can crop some from your Camosun. We’ll format a draft email for your approval, then send it out to all alumni on our email list who are tagged with your year.
  • If you want to arrange tours of the school, contact the school principal (February 2024 onwards, after renos are complete and the building is occupied again)
  • If you want to use the Vic High building or grounds for an event, contact School District 61’s Rentals Dept. to get your permit and a rental quote: email  rentals@sd61.bc.ca or phone Christine Bell  250-475-4178 or Gerda Boenbers 250-475-4174.
  • Create a budget, an estimate of projected costs. Carefully work out any fixed costs, based on a low number of potential attendees needed to make it a feasible event. You’ll need this  information to help decide what to charge people to attend various parts of your reunion. Sample Planning Budget
  • Incentives for early registration can be helpful – to start estimating attendance and provide funds for upfront expenses. Sample Registration Form 1, Sample Registration Form 2
  • Be sure to contact the Reunion Co-ordinator with key information and they will distribute the information to our Website Manager and Newsletter Editor for posting. Details can be added later.
  • Volunteers would love to attend your reunion to sell Vic High merchandise (raises funds for the Alumni’s support of Vic High) and may be able to donate a door prize. Some reunions build into their budget an amount to purchase some items as door prizes. Contact Alumni Store from the drop-down menu here.
  • Some teams create a simple website and/or Facebook page. It may help you reach more alumni and build excitement.
  • Silent auctions can help generate revenue to help cover costs. Many reunions end up with a profit and hold back a few hundred dollars as seed money for the next reunion and donate the rest to the VHS Alumni Association to help support current students and programs. Sample Silent Auction Bid Sheet
  • After the reunion, be sure to
    • send update contact information about your alumni to Alumni Membership from the drop-down menu here.
    • contact Communications from the drop-down menu here about forwarding photos from your event. These can be set up on a Past Reunions page on our website, used in an Alumni monthly e-newsletter, and storied in the Archives & Museum so we can all laugh at ourselves in a few years!

As soon as you can after the reunion, get in touch with all  your alumni – not just attendees – about what a great event it was.  Thank everyone. Collect photos from attendees they allow you to post, and post info and photos on your website/Facebook page.
